We Have the Most Impact with Teens
I started GynoTalks initially out of a frustration that I never had as much time as I wanted to spend with my teenage patients. Mothers always ask me: “when should I bring my daughter in to you for the gynotalk?“. The answer varies of course depending on each girl’s dating situation but I always tell them that as soon as their teen seems ready and open to talk about her sexuality, it could never be too soon. At the latest though, I want to see them before they head off to college or plan to move out on their own. Now fast forward to my scheduled visit with this young impressionable girl. I take more time than most gynecologists with each patient - about 30 minutes. Still, that isn’t nearly enough time to teach her everything that I need to teach her before she “flies away” on her own into the dating world. There are at least 13 different reversible contraceptives to be explained. There are many different sexually transmitted infections that I want to warn her about and teach her how to avoid. I want to drive home the importance of regulating or avoiding alcohol intake and how making the wrong decisions in that arena can often lead to unintended pregnancy or worse. This would take me at least an hour! Even then, I am only teaching this one girl. What about all the others out there who don’t have a doctor that can take this much time? Even when all of our well meaning mothers try, they themselves don’t have all the correct information to teach their daughters. My solution was to create GynoTalks and use social media to make educational YouTube videos and to hold local educational seminars that can also be shared via Facebook live.
